Shabby Chic Toddler Room: A Labor of Love

When determining how to categorize the design style in this room, it occurred to me that it was truly a mixture of styles – A Traditional chair from another room in our home, Pottery Barn Transitional twin beds, Boho wall hangings, Shabby kid-friendly canvas drawers and storage bins from Amazon, along with lots of comfortable Country pom pom pillows.  This mixture is a fitting example of what Shabby Chic is at its core.

This room was previously used by my son from elementary school through his college years, but my three-year old granddaughter needed a special room when visiting grandma, and fully transplanted him!   After so many years of modest updates, the room needed work from top to bottom. We refreshed the walls with a very light gray/hint-of-blue eggshell paint and replaced the wall-to-wall carpet with durable light gray wood-look vinyl tile from Floor and Decor.  We added a colorful children’s educational rug at the foot of the twin beds, which created a comfy play area.

The floor was seamlessly extended fully into the closet, which made the room look larger.  One of the best changes that we made was removing the sliding closet doors and replacing them with Pottery Barn 96″ length curtains that matched the twin beds.  The curtains allow the repurposed closet to serve as a stage when they are closed, then opened when she is ready to perform a karaoke song.  Lots of fun purple polka dot storage allows for a colorful shabby design and serves as storage for some of my design files and office items. And since there was a window in the closet, having curtains instead of the closet door also allowed for more light in the room.

Touches of chic can be found throughout the room, including the HomeGoods polka dot glass lamp and large custom framed artwork.

Designing this this room was truly a labor of love!
